How pneumatic starters work
When the engine starting sequence is initiated a rush of compressed
air is released. This strikes the primary turbine wheel and causes
it to rotate at high speed. As the air exits the first wheel it
strikes each subsequent wheel causing each to turn. Eventually the
wheels reach speeds of between 25 to 40 thousand rpm. This velocity
is reduced by about 10:1 inside a planetary gearbox sitting just in
front of the turbine mechanism.

AST600 Air Starter is comprise of power part and output part. The
power part is vane pneumatic motor. When starting the diesel
engine, the compressed air enter from pre-engagement air inlet hole
of output part and push the output part and push the output gear to
extrude forward, adjust automatically to ensure the correct
engaging position. When the output gear reaches specified stroke,
the compressed air is connected with air relay through
pre-engagement air outlet hale. At this time, open main air
circuit, the compressed air enter vane pneumatic motor part, and
the motor starts to rotate which drive the diesel engine. After
start-up o of diesel engine the said motor will overstep by
overstep clutch. If the air source is cut off the output gear will
draw back, the whole start-up process is completed.
This product is used under the working air pressure no more than
0.8MPa. maximum power 17KW. The main technical parameters at
